Assessment of URANS and LES methods in predicting wake shed behind a vertical axis wind turbine

In order to shed light on the Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT) wake characteristics, in this paper we present high-fidelity CFD simulations of flow around an exemplary H-shaped VAWT turbine, and propose apply Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) computed field near rotor. The turbine under consideration was widely studied previous experimental computational investigations. first part study, multiple Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) were performed at Tip Speed Ratio (TSR) peak power coefficient, select most accurate turbulence model with respect available data. following step, further RANS numerical different TSRs compare coefficient against Then, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) applied for TSR conditions. spatial temporal POD modes along modal energy LES results extracted, performance models assessed. Also, interpretation structures given highlight significant time length scales predictions considering dynamical levels approximations models.
